1 incredible Scholars Summit!
ElevateMeD was proud to host its second Scholars Summit during our Explosion of a Dream weekend. This year’s summit was attended by 18 of the program's 2022-2023 cohort and 5 Scholar Alumni. This weekend of workshops was designed to provide our Scholars with workshops tailored toward their professional development as an enhancement to the programming received throughout the academic year. This year's Scholars Summit was fully funded through sponsorship provided by Mayo Clinic, Novocure and Bristol Myers Squibb.
Welcome Reception
On Friday, September 22, we welcomed ElevateMeD Scholars from near and far, providing them an informal opportunity to network with Mentors, members of the ElevateMeD Board of Directors and Advisory Board, and 2022 Breaking Barriers Award recipient Dr. Wayne Franklin of Phoenix Children’s.
Professional Headshots
The value of a professional headshot is priceless. Thanks to ElevateMeD’s Brand Manager, Deanna Reid of The Social Photog, we are able to capture fresh images that students can use going into their interview season and for their professional branding materials.
Icebreaker
Many of the Scholars present have only met each other virtually. To kick off the day of learning and connection, Dr. Marissa Vasquez, programming manager began the day with an exciting icebreaker that allowed everyone in the room to get to know each other beyond their white coats.
Core Values
The first workshop of the day was presented by Joslyn Vaught. At Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, Joslyn advances the leadership and team development skills of future physicians. She promoted the exploration of each Scholar’s core values with affirmation cards. Each student selected a card based on the value the card reflected, and spoke about the importance of knowing and living your core values as they provide hope and healing to the patients they serve.
Skill Building
National Storytelling Coach Doug Stevenson returned from retirement to spend valuable time with our Scholars. His approach to storytelling places emphasis on creating outcome-driven stories. While working through Doug’s Nine Steps of Story Structure, the students were able to craft their personal stories about why they decided to pursue medicine. These students can use this method as they journey into interview season and create their personal statements.
Mitigating Burnout
In this pandemic era where physician burnout is at an all-time high, Keith Jones, health and wellness coach, opened up a conversation with the ElevateMeD Scholars promoting their daily wellness journey. Sharing openly their experiences navigating the fast-paced life of medicine, Jones facilitated discussion surrounding techniques each Scholar can implement to preserve their health and wellness.
Lunch and Learn
This year’s Lunch and Learn featured opening remarks from Mayo Clinic CEO Dr. Richard Gray, who spoke to the importance of workforce diversity and Mayo Clinic’s commitment to live their mission. The Scholars also had the opportunity to hear from the 2022 ElevateMeD Breaking Barriers Award recipient Dr. Wayne Franklin, who shared his journey to becoming the Robinson Family Endowed Chair and Division Chief of Cardiology at Phoenix Children’s sharing key lessons learned along the way.
In honoring the tenet of lifting as we climb, ElevateMeD was thrilled to welcome former Alumni to Alumni join us for the Summit! We hosted our first graduate panel featuring Dr. Mahdieh Hosseini, Dr. Aaron Bia, Dr. Kalonji Cole, Dr. Camara Sharperson, and Dr. Caylan Bookman. Moderated by Dr. Wayne Franklin, Scholars were able to ask the graduates about their experiences in residency and lessons they also learned on their medical school journey.
ElevateMeD “Shark Tank”
Recognizing the importance of innovation in order to push science forward, we presented our first innovation and entrepreneurship panel, featuring Dr. Tiffany Hardaway, Tiffany Williams, Brittany McElroy, and Dwayne Sansone who spoke about their career choices and some of the ways they pivoted along the way.
Thanks to Justin Bayless of the Bayless Family Foundation and ElevateMeD Programs Chair, Dr. Marissa Vasquez, following the panel, the Scholars participated in their very own ElevateMeD “Shark Tank”. Divided into small groups charged with the responsibility of innovating, they pitched their ideas to our ElevateMeD Sharks and learned important skills related to entrepreneurship.
Explosion of A Dream
Later in the evening, we celebrated the fourth annual Explosion of a Dream annual scholarship event with over 300 supporters to raise awareness and funding for the organization's Scholars Program. You can learn more about the event by clicking here.
