Explosion of a Dream 2021: Scholars Summit
Explosion of a Dream
Scholars Summit 2021
The first Scholars Summit featured four elements: a storytelling session with storytelling coach Doug Stevenson, a wellness and balance session with wellness expert Keith Jones, a lunch and learn session with Reuben Lewis of National Financial Group, as well as the opportunity to take professional headshots with The Social Photog. This was the first in-person programming held for Scholars since the organization's launch. This presented the opportunity for the Board Members and Scholars to network and meet.
Welcome Reception
On Friday, October 1, 2021, ElevateMeD Scholars, Board, and staff traveled from various states across the country to Scottsdale, Arizona to kick off Explosion of a Dream Weekend. Gathering for the first time in-person for a casual welcome reception at AC Hotel by Marriott Scottsdale North.
Headshots with The Social Photog
Helping our students build their professional brand is important for their leadership success. We provided each scholar with an updated professional headshot to utilize during their current residency application cycle and for them to use to build their personal brand online. These head shots were photographed and edited by ElevateMeD’s Brand and Marketing manager Deanna S. Reid of The Social Photog.
Opening Ice Breaker
The day opened with a team-building exercise led by our programming chair Dr. Marissa Vasquez. In this exercise, the Scholars were split into small groups to operate on a trauma patient (symbolized with Mr. Potato Head). Each group had one lead operating surgeon, who was the only person allowed to operate, taking direction from the team. This activity allowed the students to get a true sense of working together under pressure and the core values needed to get a task complete in the world of medicine-- communication, teamwork, trust, and integrity!
Storytelling Workshop with Doug Stevenson
Doug Stevenson was one of the first investors in the ElevateMeD dream, offering our Founder a free session to begin crafting the ElevateMeD narrative. Having him lead our students in a 1.5-hour session was important to allow these students professional development in crafting their own narratives. As future physician leaders, the students will have residency interviews and may find themselves speaking in front of audiences to share their insights. The training allowed students to ask questions, share and receive feedback on each other’s stories, and gain proven methods to relay their message clearly and effectively. Each student was given autographed copies of Doug Stevenson’s strategic storytelling book titled, “Story Theatre Method”.
Wellness and Balance with Keith Jones
Keith Jones is a leading health expert at Mayo Clinic who has worked with numerous physicians and healthcare personnel. In this fireside-style chat, the Scholars openly spoke with Keith about what it looks like to find balance in the everyday. Keith’s questions challenged the Scholars to begin incorporating wellness practices in their current lives so that they can go on to become physician leaders who are holistically well.
ElevateMeD Board Meeting
While our Scholars learned from Doug Stevenson and Keith Jones, our Board of Directors held an in-person board meeting and training with TJ Marie Consulting. This meeting allows the Board to also receive valuable information on the organization and how we continue to move forward in our mission of elevating medicine. Present were nine of the ten board members, with one member joining virtually.
Lunch & Learn: Financial Planning and Debt Management
Our Scholars and Board Members gathered together for a lesson on financial planning and debt management with the National Financial Group. Representatives for the firm were available to ask questions about what students should anticipate in their upcoming career as physicians and things to consider as residents. For many students, it was their first time hearing about some of the terms and financial decisions they will need to make considering their debt. We are happy that we will begin opening the conversation for them to manage their finances in a way that allows them to have financial freedom.
After the Scholars Summit
ElevateMeD Scholars, Board Members, and staff headed to Scottsdale Hangar One for our signature annual fundraiser event, Explosion of a Dream. The event was well attended with more than 180 guests present. Guests enjoyed the cocktail hour with a photo booth, hors d'oeuvres, live entertainment with violinist Bruce Kirkwood and mingling with the Scholars. At 6pm, the programming began.
