Dr. Gregory L. Umphrey, a native of Albuquerque, New Mexico, is a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician in Phoenix Arizona, specializing in interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound, and musculoskeletal and spine rehabilitation. He has been board certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation from 2008 to the present. As a former gymnast of 17 years competing on the national and international level, culminating in becoming an All-American in gymnastics and being nominated for the Nissen Award in 1994 (the Heisman trophy of gymnastics), he was drawn to medicine through the many injuries he sustained from his sport. He attended the University of California at Los Angeles, earning his bachelor of science degree in microbiology and molecular genetics in 1996. During this time, he performed in a Kodak camera gymnastics commercial for the 1996 summer olympics, and helped to coach his older brother Chainey Umphrey in gymnastics, who became a member of the 1996 USA Olympic Team in men’s gymnastics. Additionally, he was also a stunt double for the actress, Whoopie Goldberg, in the former ABC television show “Muppets Tonight” in 1997. He subsequently worked in the UCLA athletic department as a peer academic counselor for student athletes, before matriculating to Howard University College of Medicine, where he received his medical degree with high honors, being inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society in 2002. He participated in orthopedic surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and completed his residency training in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Mayo Clinic in 2008, during which time he was elected Chief Resident of the physical medicine and rehabilitation program, and was an on-site team physician for high school football in Minnesota. During that time, he and his spouse also traveled to Maua, Kenya on a medical mission to provide medical care in an impoverished region.
Dr. Umphrey is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and believes in treating the whole person, not just the problem area, by providing non-surgical treatments to restore maximum function lost through injury, illness or disabling conditions. Dr. Umphrey leads care of patients with neck, back, joint, muscle, and nerve pain by using a myriad of interventional therapies including ultrasound and fluoroscopic guided procedures, and electrodiagnostic testing to further assess nerve function. Building his career utilizing ultrasound techniques, Dr. Umphrey remains at the forefront regarding nuanced interventions using regenerative medicine techniques, such as platelet rich plasma. He is known for his diagnostic precision, caring demeanor, and thorough approach to patient care.
Dr. Umphrey is also a member of the Sigma Pi Phi Gammu Mu Boulé in Phoenix, as well as the Arizona Society of Black Physicians National Medical Association. Dr. Umphrey has been featured on local news and lifestyle television programming in the Phoenix Metropolitan area and in print. He and his spouse were also featured on the cover of Top Doctor Magazine, Issue 142. He is married to Dr. Alyx Porter-Umphrey, M.D., a neuro-oncologist at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, AZ and founder of ElevateMeD. The couple are the proud parents of a son (Rylan, 13), daughter (Makena, 11), and Golden Retriever - Coton de Tuléar mix (Sunset Phoenix, 2).
